My time in Santa Cruz has come to an end. Obviously it was very emotional to say goodbye and there was lots of crying at school. Or maybe not :p
This morning I got an early bus to Los Cristianos where I boarded the 08:45 ferry to La Gomera. The crossing took about an hour. I got off at the capital which is called San Sebastian. It probably has no more than a couple thousand inhabitants. Before I got going I stepped into the tourism office to ask for a map of trails and for directions to the starting point. The lady who helped me, told me that there are several trails and she asked me where I wanted to go. I told her Las Hayas and she asked me if wanted to walk there today. I said yes. But that’s a three day hike she said. I especially enjoined her non verbal communication with which she clearly called me an idiot. We’ll see, I said, and I took off.
The first two hours were pretty boring. The landscape was dry and uninteresting and I ascended from 0 to 1000 meters. From there on the landscape became much greener and the mountains were just spectacular. As far as I can tell now, there’s no flat area here at all. The entire island consist of mountains. After five hours I had made good progress and I was sure that I could finish today. I wasn’t sure if I would make it before dark though. Back home that wouldn’t be a problem, but over here, when it’s dark, it’s pitch black. Especially on a cloudy day like this. Around 18:30 it was completely dark and I whipped out my new headlight. Guess what… The batteries died on me again! Just like the other day on the Teide. Walking on the motorway through the mountains in pitch black, I got flashbacks from basic training. One those moments where you ask yourself what the hell you’re doing!?@#$% Every soldier knows the only appropriate response is to dig in and walk faster to get it over with. So that’s what I did.
After about an hour, around 19:30, I finally made it to my hotel. They also have a restaurant. After eating a baby 😉 I took a hot shower and crawled into bed. I could really use a massage 🙂 Buddy! Where are you???
